- May 25, 2023
- 7:00 pm
Citizen’s Climate Lobby: How Are We Doing?” on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 7pm via Zoom. Our guest speaker is Dr. Barry Friedman, professor of physics at Sam Houston State University. Dr. Friedman is a long-time volunteer and member of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL). Use this Zoom link for the lecture.
Topic: The Citizens’ Climate Lobby organization was created for the purpose of building support in Congress for national bipartisan solutions to climate change. Within the 420 chapters in the U.S., CCL’s primary focus has been carbon fees and dividends. Following enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a new focus has been broadened to include 4 priority areas:
- Price on carbon
- Healthy forests
- Building electrification and efficiency
- Permitting reform
Dr. Friedman will describe and provide motivation for these policy areas using the En-Roads Climate Simulator. He will also show us how to save money under the IRA by applying the Rewiring America IRA savings calculator; an application that helps homeowners determine what rebates are available under the act for upgrades such as battery storage installation, heat pumps, EVs, and roof-top solar.
Speaker: Dr. Friedman is a professor of physics at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. His research background is theoretical solid state and chemical physics. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois and has been a volunteer with CCL more than 8 years.
